DEVELOPING LANGUAGE EDUCATORS ASSEMBLE WITH A MISSION

I am a language educator with nearly two decades of professional experience. Throughout my career, I have taught Mandarin and several other language-related subjects, including translation and cultural appreciation, primarily within mainstream secondary school classrooms in Singapore. Additionally, I have held curriculum leadership positions, serving for several years as Subject Head and Head of Department across two schools. Concurrently, I have led or been involved in curriculum and policy planning projects at the national level. After completing my Master’s programme, I have served as a curriculum specialist with the Mother Tongue Languages Branch of MOE Singapore from 2018 to 2024. In this capacity, while continuing to engage primarily in curriculum and policy planning and implementation, I also took on an expanded role in driving substantial research efforts. These encompassed the development of AI-enabled solutions to facilitate language learning for learners without a conducive learning environment, the investigation of language attitudes of various segments of the population towards bilingualism, the consolidation of research findings in a concise encyclopedia and the comprehensive review of various approaches to bilingualism.

Currently, I am pursuing a PhD in Applied Linguistics at the University of Reading UK. My project focuses on the design of L2 written materials to facilitate the noticing and acquisition of target linguistic features.

Guided by a personal philosophy rooted deeply in intellectual curiosity, my greatest satisfaction comes from the discovery of new information and knowledge through diligent and rigourous research. I also seek fulfilment by asking relevant questions to inspire novel ideas and solutions. My colleagues would describe me as someone who is motivated and proactive in seeking out innovations to address major gaps or maximise opportunities for the highest ROI. Above all, I am someone who commits myself to sharing knowledge to enhance overall team effectiveness.

I started this website in 2022 with the belief that a comprehensive website dedicated to connect and support language educators around the world would be meaningful. There are many websites for language learners, and a lot more for educators in general. So why not one for language educators?

When I have the privilege to interact with language educators working with different profiles of students in different contexts, I always find fresh perspectives and inspiration that can inform the work I am doing then – a classroom language teacher, a coach for aspiring teachers, a parent guiding my 3 daughters and a curriculum specialist conducting research, reviewing curriculum and curating resources.

I hope to re-create such moments for all language educators that come this way. I believe in driving practices in language teaching and learning based on sound principles informed by research. I also believe that anyone working or interested in language education could benefit from deeper understanding of the interdisciplinary issues surrounding language education.

If you are a language educator with lots of ideas, do connect with me as we seek out opportunities of knowledge exchange and collaboration.
